Punahou Bulletin: Class of '89 farewell

The first issue of the Punahou Bulletin after our graduation featured a nice article about our class. Click the images for readable versions.

Graduation Night

It's hard to believe that graduation night was just over half our lifetimes ago. I depressed myself the other day when I realized we've lived to be 18 twice. Michelle Wie wasn't even born until after we graduated. And now we're closer to 50 than we are to 21. Sorry.

Baccalaureate

This pre-graduation ceremony required that we dress up in our graduation garb (gotta love those thickly striped buff and blue ties) and sing a few songs.

Senior Chapel

Do you remember this event? I sure don't. I was happy to re-discover it when I stumbled across this program.

Senior Skip Day

Although "Skip" Day was actually a bogus organized and supervised event, it still was a welcomed day away from classes. We were given these booklets to collect written memories from friends.

Ka Punahou

Although I wasn't involved in the school newspaper, I managed to save around 90% of all Ka Punahous that were printed while we were in high school (I know, I have a problem).

Throughout this archive I added a number of relevant photos and articles that may have otherwise been forgotten by time.

In the 5/26/89 issue of Ka Punahou (high school newspaper), some of you were interviewed to discuss feelings about graduating and "senior slump."

Proms!

If you didn't remember what our prom songs were, you're in luck; I have both of our prom booklets. I even have the ballots for voting on prom songs/colors and the place card from the table I sat at for Senior Prom. If you still have your prom photos, post them in the comments section! P.D.A. in the U.S.A.

I wholeheartedly regret not being involved with the Variety Show. It was a great performance and I even went to see it twice.

Here is a short video of dress rehearsals which took place on 1/30/89. Be warned, it was filmed from the balcony and the audio is a bit poor. Actually this video really shouldn't have existed; it was culled from raw Punavision footage that I had later taped over. What is shown are the segments that survived.

Ragtime Razzmatazz

We hosted Ragtime Razzmatazz in our Junior year and for the first time, the carnival grossed over $1 million. Below is our official carnival poster that was put up around campus and on nearby telephone poles.

A collection of carnival mementos from our and other carnival years. I also found (but did not scan) the sheets containing all the names of the playoff contestants from the Wright Brothers' Flyin' Frisbees booth that I co-chaired with Tara Nakagawa, and even the Malasadas booth hats I wore when I volunteered for the previous years' carnival (I remember it earned you study hall passes).

An article in the 10/9/87 issue of the Ka Punahou covers the initial planning phases of the carnival (click to enlarge):

The 12/16/87 issue shows preparations in progress (click to enlarge):

The 2/26/87 issue includes a congratulatory note from Paul Wysard (click to enlarge):

Although held at Sea Life Park I remember little else about the event itself, except there were some musical acts performed by our classmates.

Donald Kim recalls:

It was Staughton "Stubbs" Lewis, Paul Bunda (beat boxing), Elmer Pong (DJ), Efren Baria (trumpet), Patrick Horio (keyboard) Mike Montgomery, Steven Vierck (drums) and me. After we did our thing, Jason Kauhane and Todd Kamisugi followed up with their huge VW symbols dangling from their neck. That was a fun time, and I even remember part of our rap (which Bunda made up that morning and I scrambled to memorize) which was set to the beat from a track from Licensed to Ill:

We're the Class of 89 not the Class of 88.
Compared to us all, the rest are second rate.
We're the ones with style, the ones who're slick.
Being bad like us is the beastiest trick.
Kimchee Flex is who I be.
Got my boys in the back, even Pong, "That's me!" (Elmer yells)
Monty is the boy all the girls just like.
His backup sounds better with the spit on his mike.

Do you... umm... wanna dance?

Its theme may have changed on the ticket each month, but every dance had the same routine: Check your shoes in at the weight room. Through the strobe lights, look for your friends near the bleachers. Get down to "You Spin Me 'Round (Like a Record)." Awkwardly attempt the "Running Man." Of course nothing could match the anxiety of asking that special someone to slow-dance when "Heaven" came on at the end of the night.

Mahalo Grams & Gratitude Day

Gratitude Day was an opportunity to have handwritten messages "of praise, approval or appreciation" delivered to friends. Shown below are Mahalo Grams from each year (click to enlarge).

I also saved the buttons but 1989 has gone missing.

"Strawberry Shortcake, Huckleberry Pie..."

Football - Each year we were given a sheet of coupons to attend varsity football games.

If you were at Punahou during elementary school, you may remember cheerleaders coming to the playground to sell ribbons, mini pom-poms and pennants.

Ka Punahou Photos - I scanned pics from various issues showcasing our classmates in action:
